This Family Made the Most Out of the Polar Vortex by Building This Gem Igloo. Awesome!

This is such a great family activity. I wish I had thought of it! These are some smart parents to get the kids involved in an activity to make the best of this chilling polar vortex weather. What’s amazing is how they did it. Be sure to check out the making-of video at the end!

They started by filling 200 aluminum pans that they bought from Restuarant depot.

They had some help making the different colored blocks with food coloring.

Then they filled them with water…

…and waited for them to freeze.

Fully frozen and ready to transport…

Building the first row…

Figuring out how to stack the second row…

They used snow as the mortar.

They would stack 2 blocks together, fill the cracks with snow, and then pour water over it.

They worked into the night as temperatures dropped…

After packing the snow, it took about 30-60 seconds for it to freeze enough for the block to become stable. For the top of the igloo, they had to hold the blocks a little longer.

Almost finished…

… and DONE!

This looks like it was a lot of fun to build. Check out this behind-the-scenes video of how they did it!

This is such a great way to spend time as a family in this cold weather! Much better than staying inside and playing video games.

I wonder what those colorful blocks taste like. Probably a bad idea to find out… might freeze your tongue!
