Just Another Day on “Cat Island”

On this small Japanese Island, cats far outnumber the human population. On this island, dogs are outlawed (seriously), and the locals give out food to the booming cat population, for good luck and prosperity. Photographer Fubirai recently documented some of the island’s feline citizens going about their daily routine, and if you’re a cat lover, you’re going to want to book your flight to Japan as quickly as possible.

Welcome to Tashirojima, aka “Cat Island”.

In this Japanese village, cats outnumber the humans.

Originally brought in to contain the mice population, the felines  reproduced very quickly.

The locals didn’t seem to mind, since feeding cats is considered good luck.

Eventually, those who didn’t enjoy the cats moved away, leaving the human population numbers low enough for cats to fully take over.

Now cats roam the streets, in charge of the whole island.

Dogs are outlawed on the island, but you wouldn’t want to bring one anyway. These cats wouldn’t tolerate it.

Fubirai

They truly do have the run of the place. Every surface is their playground.

The cats are treated like kings, and are truly feral. None are kept as “pets”…

Tourism has boomed lately, as word about the cat island spreads…

Just be sure to keep your eyes on your things while you’re there.

If you are a cat lover, Cat Island might seem like a good place to add to your bucket list, or your next vacation spot. It’s truly cat mecca of sorts. In 2011, the island suffered some damage from the earthquake and tsunami, but it still stands today.
